DIY Maintenance For A Gas RV

If you own a gas RV, there are some maintenance tasks you can tackle on your own. Some folks enjoy the sense of pride that comes with DIY maintenance while others simply enjoy the financial savings. Either way, the following projects are ones that an average camper owner can attempt.

For professional help from an RV dealer in Northern Indiana, you can trust the experts at Pete’s RV Center Indiana. We are based in Schererville, Indiana, and we also serve those in Indianapolis as well as Champaign and Decatur, Illinois.

Check The Oil

As a general rule, a gas RV needs an oil and oil filter change around 3,000 miles of use. If you frequently travel through dusty conditions, you may need to do this sooner.

Use a dipstick to check the oil’s color and consistency. If it’s runny and clear, you are fine. If it’s sludgy and opaque, it’s time for an oil change.

Swap Out The Fuel Filter

Your gas RV’s engine will have a fuel filter, which plays an important role in keeping particulates from clogging up the engine and hurting its performance. The fuel filter should be replaced about every 12,000 miles. If air conditions are exceptionally dusty or you think it’s clogged, swap out the fuel filter sooner.

Inspect The Fuel Tank

Regularly check the fuel tank for issues. Try to do this at least every few months or before each trip. Look for signs of damage and leaks. Don’t forget to take out the fuel cap and look at the gasket, checking that there is an even filler neck imprint.

Lubricate The Chassis

Aim to lubricate the chassis either every four months or every 6,000 miles.

Inspect The Spark Plugs

Using a spark plug wrench, you can take out a spark plug and make sure it’s still in good condition. There should not be crusty build-up and the ceramic casing should not be cracked. Note that spark plugs need maintenance every 12,000 miles.

Tend To The Cooling System

The cooling system in your gas RV will need a service either every two years or every 24,000 miles. The entire system will need to be drained and flushed, then replaced with fresh coolant.

Check The Automatic Transmission

Your gas RV’s automatic transmission fluid should be changed regularly. The exact frequency will depend on different factors. Gas RVs with a higher Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (which is found in the owner’s manual) will need the fluid and filter changed more often. If you drive in difficult conditions (such as extreme heat, routes filled with slopes, or heavy traffic), the fluid and filter will also need to be changed more often. Your owner’s manual should give you a ballpark estimate, such as every 15,000 miles for good conditions and 12,000 miles for tough conditions.
